Great essay! I agree: the notion of patients as consumers is tortured. We seem to have trouble reconciling a patient’s moral authority with the need to defer all authority to the pursuit of the best available knowledge.

Having lived this struggle for 16-years, my personal reconciliation is in the idea of the patient-as-CEO. It combines elements of value-driven leadership but doesn’t extend into micro-management.
